There will be multiple events that will impact the markets this week, most notably the release of new inflation data. There will also be several key earnings results releases for companies operating in the healthcare, mining, and technology industries.
1. Real Estate Market
The real estate market has faced headwinds in recent months due to rising inflation and the potential for further rate hikes.
One important piece of data to follow in the markets this week is the existing home sales data, which will be released on Tuesday, August the 11th at 10:00 a.m ET. Sales fell by 2.4% in June, so this is important data to follow.1
Despite these industry tensions, REITs have had very strong returns this year. Some of these products yield nearly 4%, well ahead of the S&P 500.2

It may also be a good idea to closely monitor other traditional real estate ETFs this week, including the Vanguard Real Estate ETF (VNQ) and the iShares US Real Estate ETF (IYR). Both of these ETFs could be some of the stronger market movers this week.

2. July Inflation Data
Wednesday will also be another very important day in the market this week, as new inflation data will be released at 8:30 a.m ET.
The Federal Reserve delayed hiking interest rates and is awaiting new data about inflation developments in the United States.
According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the median inflation projection is 3.6%.3
Last month’s cooldown was largely driven by the correction in energy prices, a trend that will likely also affect July data.4
Markets could respond strongly to this new data, coupled with oil price movements, as investors continue to speculate on the potential for rate hikes in H2 2026.
3. Consumer Sentiment
There will also be several important pieces of consumer data released on Friday. July retail sales data will be released on Friday at 8:30 a.m ET, while the University of Michigan preliminary consumer survey will be released at 10:00 a.m ET.
Data from last month was notably weaker relative to May, as consumers continued to feel the pressure of inflation.5

Despite this weakened sentiment, select retail equities have rallied strongly in the past month. The State Street SPDR S&P 500 Retail ETF (XRT) has rallied by 3.6% in the past month, while the Amplify Online Retail ETF (IBUY) has increased by 4.8%.

4. New Earnings Data
Although the majority of major tech and other dominant S&P 500 companies have already announced earnings, there are several important earnings releases to monitor in the markets this week.
| Monday August 10th | Simon Property Group, Rocket Labs, and Barrick Mining Corporation |
| Tuesday August 11th | SEA Limited, Lumentum Limited, and Cardinal Health |
| Wednesday August 12th | Cisco Systems and Coherent Corporation |
| Thursday August 13th | Applied Materials, Brookfield Corporation, and NetEase Inc |
| Friday August 14th | Freedom Holding Corporation and CG Oncology Inc. |
As these earnings results are released, it may also be ideal to follow developments in these areas:
- Updates from Cisco Systems, NetEase, Rocket Lab and Applied Materials, which could have a spillover impact on sentiment for tech equities
- Additional financial updates from healthcare giants like CG Oncology and Cardinal Health
5. Commodities
Commodities will also likely be a very important theme in the markets this week, especially since there will be new inflation data.
Copper will likely be a salient theme this week, as recent supply disruptions coupled with the continued demand for electrification led to a strong price spike last week.6
Precious metals stocks also trounced the S&P 500 last week, and these stocks could be worth monitoring amid the new geopolitical and economic news released in the markets this week.
Moreover, there may be continued volatility in the oil markets since the United States and Iran have failed to reach a new agreement.7
